My sister is a dog breeder and is totally against breed mixing, as it can produce dogs with health and personality problems. But, that said, there will always be those who buy them...however, these are two big dogs: are you sure you want to try? You may be making something that you or the person who buys them cannot deal with.

I would. I bet with the right dogs you could get a wonderful dog. Huge, but the sweetest thing, I bet! I grew up with Great Dane, Snoopy. I was pretty small, but I remember him being very lovable. A woman I work with has six English Mastiffs. THEY are HUGE, but very friendly and gentle with our residents. Yes, I would buy one.

Nah - I get my animals from the local shelters. I don't buy from breeders.
-
Great Danes are already a mastiff breed, why would you want to breed these two dogs?
-
I think that a bigger dog will only have more hip problems. I would rather see someone work to eliminate hip dyspepsia. I also think it's hard to improve on a Great Dane or a Mastiff. I probably wouldn't buy one, sorry. I meant to put this as a comment, sorry, I'm still getting used to the new site.:)

I know this is a bit old but I hope you will see this...Please do not cross breed!!..there is no need..if you want a bigger Great Dane, look for a breeder who specilizes in European danes, or imports. Mixing a mastiff and a dane is not going to give you the look you are imagining in your head..it took hundreds of years for breeders of Great danes and other breeds to get the "look" that they wanted, it dosn't happen over night. And they certainly were not jut throwing any 2 dogs together. We have enough mutts in sheltars across the country..please don't add to the problem.

I would not buy one. You are attempting to make a larger dog but you are not considering the negatives. Both breeds have their own genetic propensity for health problems such as hip dysplasia and assorted other ones. Those medical issues are being bred OUT of the breeds by respectable knowledgable breeders. Personality/neurotic behavior would be another concern. I personally would not breed the two. If you want an english dane..buy an english dane ..keep them healthy :)

You have got to be kidding a little Mastiff and a Great Dane? Hows the little fella going to get up to the right height a specially designed doggy-ladder? lol o lol o lol
-
While I think a great dane and a mastiff would make a dog with an irresistible temperament. (i would expect a lot of goofy love from these dogs), I wouldnt buy because 1) I only adopt shelter animals and 2) I can foresee a LOT of health problems. I think you would have a lot of unhappy dogs with pretty bad (and painful) health problems before you would be able to get a very healthy line of this cross breed.
-
No, I don't think you should breed because it kinda sounds like you are looking to make some sort of profit off them.

Hi, For sure that mix is great I have a 10yr old English Mastiff x Great Dane and she is gorgeous!! I also have a pure bred English Mastiff Male 2.5yrs. Lucy

If I were interested in a large breed dog, I would research a Dane/Mastiff cross. I would be seriously concerned about hip displasia with such a cross, though. I also do not "buy" companion animals, I adopt them either from rescue or from very reputable and ethical breeders.

love danes to bits I use to show them back in the 70's and I had one of the first 'blue' danes in Australia , your choice of breed to cross is a good one and I have seen this done a number of times and all were great dogs in everyway ...fantasic family dogs ... but you must have strong healthy dogs to begin with and you must know the family history of the dogs you intend to use and if its ok then go for it , but they are large and a little lazy and if you want an attack dog or anything like that ... forget it , they will lick you to death and love nothing better than sitting on your lap ....lol

When I was a kid, I thought breeding dogs was a great idea because I love dogs so much. Then as an adult I started working in the shelter and realized I would never breed dogs... because I love dogs so much. So I understand where you're coming from and don't want to preach at you because right now I DO believe you breed because you love dogs more than the profits that can be made for dogs, and probably think you're doing humanity a favor by making more lovable dogs for everyone. I would recommend you volunteer in a shelter for a while though and familiarize yourself with overpopulation issues.

Both the issues with over populated and KILLED dogs at pounds AND the potential genetic challenges for common health issues causes me to beg you NOT to do this. Speak to both Mastiff and Dane RESCUE GROUPS and you'll learn that both of these wonderful breeds have not only health issues that are a challenge and often cause inexperienced owners to give them up, but also both breeds ARE killed along with all the other mutts and purebreds across the USA on a nightly basis if they are not adopted by LAST DAY. Please do not add to the problems...concentrate on showing your Danes, earning your titles and IMPROVING a grand breed of dog that you already represent...the Great Dane!

hi well i not into cross breeding but i was given a great dane x pitbull who might i add had parvo she was 10 weeks old i nursed her religiously for a week 24/7 syringe feeding her boiled rice and chicken with yoghurt every 10 minutes and keeping in touch with my vet daily as he did not have high hopes she is now a yr old and she is the most loving dog u could ever ask for and she is gr8 with my 4 kids.So my attitude with unusual cross breeding has changed i think with dogs its how much time, care and love you put into them is what makes them who they are good luck if you choose to go ahead xx

No I would not buy. Danes I like very much, Bull Mastiffs can be truculant and hard to heel. The crossbreed would be an enormous and very strong creature . Probably with some quite severe health problems since both breeds have weaknesses.
