Funny you should ask. As a kid, I read stories of ancient days, and mace called to mind a medieval war club or staff a king might carry. Then I learned to cook, and the word became more associated with a spice you put in cakes and pastries. Then I learned to party, and the word became associated with stuff the police spray in your face when you get too rowdy.
