  • Why would religious people have a problem killing people? They are going to die anyway.
  • There only difference between the behavior of Atheists and God Believers is the reason they follow the rules. God believers are afraid of divine punishment, and atheists know what is the civilized thing to do.
  • Cause God's law is written on each of our concience.
  • Really, I would expect atheists to have even greater hang ups about killing people, considering there is no afterlife. But anyway, killing people is a pretty anti-social activity, and as members of a society it is something that most people inherently know they shouldn't do.
  • They seem to have no problem killing people before they have a chance to be born.
  • People have problems doing wrong toward one another regardless of their beliefs about the supernatural. I generally believe, as many others do I'm sure, that religious people are *more* likely to do wrong toward others than their less religious counterparts because they know they can always cure a bothersome conscience by apologizing to their god, asking for forgiveness, and assuming a redeemed posture. But consider this: if atheists had no problems doing wrong toward others then the globe's prisons would be filled with them. I think it's reasonable to assume that if this were the case, religious people would endlessly mention it. But, of course, they don't, because it isn't.
  • What....? You mean like the way Christians, Jews and Muslims have no problem killing people? Except they find some religious excuse for their killing! For exactly the reason of knowing that an afterlife is most unlikely, atheists are less likely to rob someone of the chance to live their life in peace.
  • We have a sense of empathy and justice like every other human being. We live in a society and know that such a horrendous act would destroy the only life we possess.
  • we're all going to die, so why would anyone have a problem killing anyone else?
  • Because their conscience/social norms/humanity prevents it?
  • Are you kidding? I betcha more people have been killed in the name of religion than any other cause! ;-)
  • We seem to have more of a problem than religious folk do. The OT and world history is packed full of people willing to slaughter others in the name of their god - even under direct commands from their god (or so they believe) and even knowing they are condemning those they slaughter to eternal torture. Nice... Atheists would have a problem with it because you only live once - once dead, you're dead. Cutting someone off early is particularly cruel.
  • They base their morals on the good of mankind. Religions base their morals on mysterious cosmic absolutes that they don't fully understand.
  • OMG, shut your fucking mouth kid
  • I have felt pain in my life and wouldn't wish any kind of pain on anyone else. I am able to have morals and such without someone commanding me to have them, such as an ancient text. Of course we are all going to die, but that's not a reason to go crazy. I honestly consider myself a good person, I just don't believe in the same things as theists.
  • Actually, countries with higher percentages of atheists rape and murder each other less, and atheist's are less likely to commit crimes. It sounds like theists are the ones with the problem when it comes to killing people.
  • Being an atheist isn't the same as being a criminal, except in the minds of a few fanatical theists.
  • I hate to break it to you, but you're probably going to die at some point too.
  • Because I want to live. And thus I infer that other people want to live as well. If I go around killing at whim, then people that want to live are going to find a way to deal with me. That means I might die, which I don't want to do. We all will die eventually, but we aren't offing ourselves left and right. I don't see how this just applies to atheists. In fact, seems like people that didn't believe in any kind of afterlife would have more respect for the fragile state of being alive.
  • Just because I don't believe there's a heaven or hell waiting for me when I die doesn't mean I won't face some earthly repercussions for my deeds. I wouldn't kill someone because there are consequences for it. If I kill someone I suffer prison, and the social, physyical, emotional effects of that punishment. As an Atheist, I only have one life, I want it to be a good one. As a social creature by nature, even if I were given free reign to kill someone with no penalty I am smart enough to understand that killing somoen is killing someone elses child or parent or loved one, I would surely get no joy from it.
