I went on a cross-country flight from Kentucky to Oregon alone when I was 14 but I had my cousin meeting me at the airport. If you mean a trip alone without someone meeting you at your destination, 16 is a little young.
The Salem/Boston ferry runs from Memorial to Halloween day, is there any other way like water taxis that can be taken off season?
