Oh, no. My parents used to watch Huckleberry Hound, Yogi Bear, and Quickdraw McGraw with us all the time. Sometimes they even watched Bugs Bunny and Friends with us.
We used to, with our kids, watch the Smurfs (maybe more child-oriented), Care-Bears (Ditto), and Thundercats, among others, like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And my wife especially loved "Pinky & the Brain", Rugrats, and the Loony Toons "kids" (I forget the name).
And, now-a-days, kids' cartoons are pretty educational. If nothing else, you should monitor (watch) them, so you know what your kid is learning.
But even so, there are plenty of cartoons, including anime, that are more "adult oriented" - Say, the Simpsons, Family Guy, etc.

with four kids I watch cartoons all the time granted they are not as good as they were back in the day but funny none the less...of course Family Guy is an exception and the older South parks as well

The Fritz the Cat cartoon movie was rated X when it was released. Definitely not for kids.

No, especially the ones from the "classic" period of the 30s and 40s. There were many themes that were clearly aimed at adults, although children could enjoy them without understanding those themes. +3

Do u mean the carackters age or the programs age? I think the program started in 2000/2001. Bob well he has a work in the cartoon so id say hes got a brain of a 5 year old but sumtimes he sounds alot older with sum very smart that he makes
