As others have also responded, you cannot enter the formula =A1 + B1 into cell B1 (or A1). Doing so will give you a Circular Reference error. So the thing that you propose will not work, as proposed.

But if you give us some additional detail to work with, or an explanation of exactly what purpose you are trying to achieve, perhaps we can offer a workable solution. For example, attempting to retain "every old value of B1" in a single cell is impractical (there actually IS a way to approximate this, but it's not a very useful one, and could never be used in calculation). So if you'll consider sharing some ideas about the application you have in mind, I'm confident that there's "a way" to find something satisfactory.

    Allikum asalam.

If I understand, assuming that the value of B1 before adding is known and fixed, you would simply enter the known value and add A1 e.g. =X+a1

I am a bit confused however by wishing the B1 value to remain the same "while it is being calculated" as this is instantaneous.

If you want the calculation to take place only after neccesary data has been entered which will deterine the value of A1 or B1, you can use IF funtions.

Not understanding what you want to do I can't comment but if you lok up IF functions in Excel help you will figure it out yourself.

You can insert a cell to the left of that you added?

I'm afraid that is impossible, you'll have to use C1. Even then you won't be able to include previous values of B1.
