We bought land and built a home. Thus we were more concerned with the amount of land, its location and what kind of resources (stone, water, drainage) were in the land. When it came to building the house we took into account energy efficiency, solar gain and cripple access - I am usually on a cane and I know that in a few years I will be on a walker or a crutches and later than that a wheel chair.

A full basement with plumbing and full electrical--that is, a basement that exists under the entire ground floor. Our neighbors went with a basement under only a portion of the ground floor and later regretted the lack of storage and additional living space.
