Diesel is one of the most widely used transportation fuels. Improvements to diesel fuels have been achieved as a result of government regulations and advances in the science behind diesel production.
Main Component
Crude oil that is imported and exported worldwide is the main component for all types of diesel fuel.
Removed Components
In its raw form, crude oil contains many hydrocarbon elements that are removed or modified to create the desired characteristics for diesel to be used as fuel. Sulfur is one component that is specifically targeted for removal in order to meet EPA environmental guidelines.
Added Components
Diesel fuel additives make diesel fuel more economical and increase the life of diesel engines. Detergents, corrosion inhibitors and demulsifiers are examples of common additives to diesel fuel.
New Formulas
The U.S. Diesel Emissions Reduction Act of 2005 released new regulations for the production of cleaner diesel fuel. This initiative has led to ongoing research to produce cleaner, more environmentally friendly formulas for diesel fuel.
Biodiesel
Biodiesel is a term that refers to a variety of oils that can be substituted for regular diesel, primarily in diesel automobile engines. Corn, soy and used cooking oil are all examples of biodiesel.
