  • Heart problems can range from mild conditions that simply require periodic monitoring to life-threatening defects that require major surgery. Treatment for heart problems will vary depending on the nature and severity of the problem, as well as how it has responded to previous treatment.

    Arrhythmia

Arrhythmia (an irregular heartbeat) is treated depending on severity and cause. Treatments may include lifestyle changes (such as changing one's diet, exercising more, losing weight and reducing stress), medications or surgery. In some cases, arrhythmia may not require treatment other than ongoing monitoring of the condition.

    Heart Valve Disease

Heart valve disease is typically treated either through open heart surgery, in which the valve is replaced, or through a less invasive procedure known as "balloon valvuloplasty," which uses smaller incisions and does not require opening up the chest.

    Heart Failure

Heart failure is usually treated with a combination of medicines, and may require surgery. Common surgical procedures for heart failure include bypass and angioplasty.

    Coronary Artery Disease

Coronary artery disease is usually treated with a combination of lifestyle changes (such as diet, exercise and stress-reducing techniques) and medication. In some cases, more invasive procedures such angioplasty, stent placement, and, possibly, bypass surgery may be necessary.

    Cardiomyopathy

Cardiomyopathy is a disease in which the heart muscle's functioning is hampered. The treatment for cardiomyopathy will depend on its severity and the type of cardiomyopathy that a person has. Treatments may include medication, implanted devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators, and in very severe cases, heart transplant.
