<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Good Breed Attributes
Rottweilers are typically calm and confident dogs with fierce loyalty to the members of their family, according to the online Dog Owner's Guide. This inherent loyalty in the breed makes for wonderful watchdogs who are ready and willing to defend both your home and your family. Additionally, the American Rottweiler Club (ARC) suggests that the breed is highly intelligent. The dogs will respond to commands and training as soon as they understand what you desire.
On the Other: Potential Negative Qualities
Aggression is sometimes associated with rottweilers, which may be dangerous when misdirected. The ARC also notes that the size of the dog can be problematic in a home with small children, who may be easily bumped or knocked down by a large animal. Rottweilers are also prone to serious health problems, which may put a strain on a family with a budget.
Bottom Line
Rottweilers--especially when well-bred--can make good family pets if the children in the home are big enough to handle the breed size. It also helps if the adults in the family have time to nurture and properly train the dog to have the desired temperament and behaviors.
