According to the National Gardening Association, most vegetables prefer a slightly acidic soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.8. Check the pH of your soil every three to five years. Tests are available at garden centers or your local garden center or extension office may test the soil for you.

    On the Other: Apply Second

Once you have determined the pH of your soil, apply the lime only if necessary. If you have high pH (alkaline) soils you will want to add sulfur to your soil to lower the pH. If you determine lime is necessary, add enough lime to increase your pH to between 6 and 7. A general guideline to follow is to add 40 pounds of lime per 1,000 square feet.

    Bottom Line

Test your soil to determine if you need lime or an alternative such as sulfur. Then adjust the amount of lime you need by the pH of your soil.
