    After the election of Lincoln in 1860, most slave states (exceptions: Maryland, Delaware, Kentucky and Missouri) seceded from the Union to form the Confederate States of America. The first hostile act occurred when Federal troops refused the demand of South Carolina to hand over Ft.Sumpter to state forces. The fort was then fired upon and eventually abandoned. +2
