For one thing: many people are off work today (Veteran's Day) so why not have a sale to encourage them to come in?
That's just one of their gimmicks. I've also seen stores having a "going out of business" sale for the last few years. I remember one store in my city that had a going out of business sale. The sale went so well that they decided to stay in business!
We have a capitalistic society for the time being, and thats just the way it is, everyone grabbing for ever little dollar they can get their hands on, not realizing that a dollar means nothing, they worship the dollar, and don't even know it.
I know that when I worked retail, we always had big sales on the days that most people didn't work: weekends, holidays, etc.
It sucked for me, but that's when you made your biggest commissions, so you didn't miss those days.
