You have to have OBV or a card that will support dual display If it doesn't it is one or the other
-
have you tried right clicking your desktop>properties>settings tab> and then manipulate the numbered screens

Not all laptops can do that. My netbook can and it behaves like most laptops I've seen that can. If you just hook up a monitor to the built-in VGA port then it won't do anything. Pressing Fn+F5 once will mirror the display as you are doing. In order to use it as a second desktop, you have to hold down the Fn key and hit F5 twice.

I used my laptop computer with a desktop monitor and it always had the same screen as the laptop screen. I was not looking for an extra desktop. I just wanted a bigger screen. I also connected a regular keyboard and mouse to mine. I made my own desktop computer out of my laptop! lol I do not like the small keyboard or those goofy touchpads on a laptop at all! * I would put the laptop/screen down so I didn't have to see it. I still have the laptop but have not used it since I got my Dell desktop system. Sorry for going off topic. But I do feel much better now having said all that! :-) Good luck, I hope you will be able to accomplish what you want to do. :-)
