See a licensed attorney in your state about a possible lawsuit, but it's my opinion that any attorney will tell you that it is a total waste of your time, because by paying the extra money and boarding the flight offered to you, you ACCEPTED their "offer" voluntarily, and you were not forced to board that aircraft, right?

i've had travel insurance before that has covered a missed flight. that was a few years ago though and not all travel insurance does.

You're reading I missed a flight from Rome to the U.S. and they charged $4,500.00 to get home on top of the already paid fair. Is there any way to recoup some or all? I was fully prepared to pay a penalty...but this was extortion.

Definately not forced however was told that it was my only option if I wanted to get home

As I said, JCS, see an attorney, immediately, because you'll be dealing with international law (probably; not certain here) and there may be a statute of limitations involved, so you can't afford to waste any time at all, "debating" or deciding this issue. You need to ACT, and NOW.
.
Thanks to both of you, for the points.
