In the rough-and-tumble of football, it is fairly common for players (either accidentally or on purpose) to poke their hands into the faces of other players. A conventional face mask (a grid of plastic bars) provides some protection, but a clear plastic visor provides better eye protection. I bet that *some* players also do it because they think it makes them look more intimidating (kind of a Darth Vader-esque visage).

So you can see through it. It wouldn't be as useful if it was opaque.

If you don't like being poked in the eye, then you can wear one to protect you from it.
