How come there are more mandarin speakers in the world than the number of english speakers of UK, USA, Ireland, Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand etc put together?

    Because China has the largest population in the world.

    It's like asking why there are more Spanish speakers than Chuukese speakers.
