  • Drilling is done so that the engineers can find out what types of rock they have in the area. As the drills go down, geologists take samples of the rocks that are coming out of the hole. These samples are tested to determine the characteristics of the rocks below the surface. Based on these tests, they can tell the engineers how solid the rock is, how far down is the bedrock, how likely is the overlying sediment to shift is you put weight on it or subject it to changing weather conditions. Based on this, the engineers can then figure out just what they need to do to provide a firm foundation for the structure they are building.
