    There is really not much you can do as rumors tend to have a life of their own and are perpetuated because people have fun with them. If someone asks or talks to you about one you know to be untrue you can just say no that never happened, this is what happened and tell them the truth about it firmly. If something comes out in a newspaper you can write a letter to the editor correcting it. Beyond that there is not much that can be done.

    it is, more or less, impossible, as rumors do not feed on truth or even on lies, but rather on the human will to spread rumors :P. In many cases "the truth will set you free", but only if the truth verifiably disproves the rumor I suppose.
