American Football is a bit like Rugby, but with added gayness.

    11 players per side.
Object in American is to reach the goal line. Object in soccer is to score a goal.
I think it stops there because as we all know you can't use your hands on soccer, the clock doesn't stop, No more than 3 changes of player per team. and many more differences.
I wouldn't call it "European" only though. Whether or not Americans agree, it's the most popular sport in the world.

11 players on each sides , played in the field and both games are very entertaining.

In soccer, the ball is round. In football, nobody even has a word for the ball's shape.

In soccer, athletes run around chasing the ball. In football, ogres run around chasing the ogre with the ball.

In soccer, only two guys use their hands, and only to touch the ball. In football, everybody uses their hands to grab each other.

In soccer, if nobody wins, it's ok. That's why it will never be as good as football.

    Nothing, they're the same sport.

There are a few variants like Gaelic Football, Australian Football, International Football and American Football which do have different rules, usually copied Rugby rules.

American football is more like rugby than soccer. In fact considering apart from punts, the ball is carried in the hands, it shouldn't really be called football at all.

I think that the same amount of people are on the field at the same time. They both have balls. They both score goals. They both have backs. They both have to defend their goals because that is how scores are made: by getting the ball into the other team's goal. That's all I can think of at this time.

Nothing. Soccer is short for "Association Football"
The only country in which it's referred to as Soccer is America.

In the UK its the same thing.

In the US, footbal is played by men with odd shaped balls!
They also wear crash hats and body armour because they are wooses! Unlike the guys in the UK that play rugby!

I think another important difference is that association football is played in a lot of smaller countries. In a really big country like the US it's no problem if only one in every 100 people like a sport, you still have 3 million fans nationwide, enough to have a professional league. That's why the US has baseball, basketball, ice hockey, American Football and probably more being played at a professional level. Over here in the Netherlands there really is only one sport that can gather enough fans and resources to host a professional league, with as a consequence that every single guy that likes to hang on the coutch with friends and scream at the television screen while drinking beer is a fan of association football. Because it has such a lot of fans, and because we're not basically the only country playing the sport, stuff like the world cup is a bigger deal here, the whole nation comes to a grinding stall for a few weeks. It's worse than even the superbowl.

American football players get paid more, and American football fans don't risk their lives simply by attending games.

You'd think such a heavy contact sport would be less civilized than one where physical contact is (more-or-less) accidental. But European football is the more barbaric of the two.
