  • People drop cell phones into the toilet, into the ocean, into mud puddles, into washing machines and even into a glass of tomato juice. When you get your phone wet, don't turn it back on. Immediately remove the battery and the SIM card if one is present. Then you can try a couple of methods to dry it out.

    Blow dry

Try to dry the phone quickly by blowing or sucking the moisture out. Use an air compressor or a portable vacuum cleaner. Don't us a hair dryer, which blows hot air that can damage the phone beyond repair.

    Absorb moisture

Bury the phone in a bowl of uncooked rice for several hours to absorb water out of the phone. Use a bowl or other container a little larger than your phone. You can also use a plastic bag that seals. If you are worried about getting rice particles inside your phone, use packets of silica gel instead. Experts at Popular Mechanics say a little rice dust is less important than getting the phone into a moisture-absorbing substance as soon as possible. If your phone was dunked in salt water, soak it in tap water before you attempt to repair it, Popular Mechanics recommends. The crystals left when salt water evaporates can damage your phone further.

    Avoid

Avoid any type of heat when trying to dry your phone. If it is too hot for your skin, it is too hot for your phone. The internal components of your phone can be ruined by high heat. Never stick your phone in a microwave, which could cause further damage. Avoid other techniques to repair a phone such as dunking it in rubbing alcohol, which can disintegrate some of the glue that holds parts together.
