<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Paxil Can Cause Hair Loss
Paxil can lead to temporary hair loss. It is not fully understood why hair loss occurs when taking some medications, but it is believed that Paxil, and other SSRI medications, may deplete the body's stores of protein or amino acids, leading to hair loss.
On the Other: Paxil is an Effective Medication
Paxil is an effective treatment for depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other health conditions that can greatly decrease quality of life. Paxil has a variety of potential side effects, including loss of appetite, easy bruising, drowsiness, yawning, dry mouth and hair loss. Most healthcare providers consider Paxil to be a safe and effective treatment for a variety of conditions. In many cases mild side effects, such as hair loss, will resolve after the body adjusts to the medication.
Bottom Line
All prescription medications have some chance of causing unpleasant side effects. Hair loss from Paxil is a relatively uncommon and mild side effect. For those who experience hair loss, it is typically minor and temporary. Other SSRIs, such as Celexa and Zoloft, can cause hair loss as well.
