<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Hypothyroidism Does Affect the Hair
Hypothyroidism, or under-active thyroid, causes a variety of symptoms in the body, including weight gain, constipation, intolerance to the cold and fatigue. Hypothyroidism also affects the skin and hair. People suffering from hypothyroidism often develop dry skin, brittle fingernails and coarse hair.
On the Other: Hair Loss is Not Common
In cases of mild hypothyroidism, it is unusual that the patient will experience hair loss. Untreated, hypothyroidism symptoms worsen, and it is possible for the patient to develop hair loss. By the time the patient exhibits hair loss as a symptom of hypothyroidism, she is probably experiencing a wide range of other symptoms, such as depression, voice changes and trouble concentrating.
Bottom Line
Hair loss is a normal part of the hair's life cycle, and can also be a sign of stress, illness or a result of heredity. A simple blood test can rule out hypothyroidism, and is worth the peace of mind if you are concerned about hair loss.
