Iron is essential in the human body since it primarily functions as a carrier of oxygen. We primarily derive iron from nutrition although you may also take supplements. Iron levels that are too low or too high can have adverse effects on the body including hair loss. Lack of iron in the blood can lead to iron deficiency anemia, which is the most common form of anemia. Iron deficiency anemia is more common in women than men. Hair loss may result from such a deficiency.

On the Other: Too Much of a Good Thing

Although iron is necessary, too much iron in the body can also have adverse effects. An excess of iron in the body may occur as a result of genetics, taking large amounts or iron supplement or other factors. There are several signs and symptoms of too much iron, including hair loss. Iron reduction may become necessary if a person is suffering from iron overload.

    Bottom Line

Iron levels that are too high or too low may result in hair loss as well as other symptoms. In most cases, iron derived from nutritional (food) sources provides an adequate supply. Taking an iron supplement may not be necessary and may result in too much iron. Women are less likely to derive sufficient amounts of iron from nutritional sources than men, in which case iron deficiency may result and supplemental sources may be needed. Consult your physician if you are uncertain whether you should take an iron supplement. There can be many underlying causes of hair loss, therefore you should report hair loss or other symptoms to your physician for evaluation.
