Once bacteria have been introduced, virtually any container becomes a suitable environment for bacterial growth." To ensure bacteria do not form, wash the container out frequently. A good time is when the food level is depleted, and new food is about to be added.
On the Other: The Dog Food
Because bacteria thrive in moist environments, wet dog food is more susceptible to bacteria growth than dry dog food. If wet dog food is stored in the container, the owner should be sure the container has an air-tight lid. Wash the container every time you use all the food. If dry food is stored in the container, make sure no crumbs are present on the exterior.
Bottom Line
Whether wet or dry food is stored in the container, plastic is an undesirable surface for bacteria growth. However, owners must still clean the container depending on the food type.
