Even though HDTVs have become the norm in the television industry, they are accompanied by some concepts and terms that remain unfamiliar to many people.
Facts
The term "HD tuner" refers to a component that receives a broadcast television signal with HD, or high-definition, content.
Significance
High-definition TV sets can display a much more detailed image (1920 x 1080 pixel or 1280 x 720 pixel) than a conventional CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) or standard-definition television.
Types
In March 2007, a law required almost all televisions to have a built in HD tuner that can receive a high-definition signal by simply connecting to an antenna. Other HD televisions made prior to that time required an external HD tuner in order to receive those signals.
Resolution
The difference in picture quality on HDTV and a standard-definition television is due to the difference in resolution. A standard-definition television has 480 lines of detail, while an HDTV has as many as 1080 lines of detail.
Features
A television with an HD tuner has the ability to display standard-definition, progressive scan DVDs and HDTV signals.
