Hybrid cars are a successful automotive alternative technology. By 2016, American cars should get a standard of 35.5 miles per gallon; hybrids, which are increasingly popular, are getting this as of 2009. Hybrids hold nine of the 10 top spots in the 2010 Fuel Economy Guide.
Lower Greenhouse Emissions
Hybrids significantly reduce greenhouse emissions. These emissions not only pollute the air but contain cancer-causing emissions. Hybrids reduce emissions by 80 percent compared with gasoline-powered cars.
Fuel Efficient
HEVs are extremely fuel efficient. The Toyota Prius is the most efficient at its estimated 51 mpg city and 48 mpg highway. Honda's Civic (40 and 45) and Insight (40 and 43) are not far behind. The Ford Fusion gets 23 mpg city and 34 mpg highway, but in the electric-only mode, it gets 47 mpg.
Not Oil-Based
Hybrids help reduce dependency upon nonrenewable foreign oil. An America that is more independent in its fuel needs frees itself of fluctuating fuel prices.
Noise Pollution
HEVs help reduce noise pollution. A hybrid operates very quietly.
Incentives
Many states offer incentives to buy a hybrid. Some federal tax incentives remain, although they will be phased out by 2010.
