Androgenetic alopecia is the condition that is responsible for normal male and female pattern baldness. This condition is a hereditary condition attributed to androgens, such as Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Androgens are male hormones that are present in females in very small amounts. The normal aging process results in a decrease of hormones that balance out androgens. This imbalance can cause hair growth to slow or stop.

On the Other: Smoking Increases the Rate of Hair Loss

Smoking negatively affects hair follicles. When you smoke, the vascular system is affected by the chemicals in the cigarettes. Signals are produced that tell the blood vessels to constrict. When the vessels that lead to the hair follicles are constricted, the follicles begin to close. This causes a decrease in hair production, while the hair continues to shed at a normal rate.

    Bottom Line

Smoking affects every system in your body. Your hair follicles aren't immune to the effects of cigarettes. While there isn't any evidence that smoking will cause baldness, it does speed up the hair loss process.
