Nature's Way 5-hydroxytryptophan (HTP) is a naturally occurring amino acid derived from the seeds of an African plant. 5-HTP is converted into serotonin, a neurotransmitter that the body uses to elevate mood. As a dietary supplement taken without prescription, 5-HTP has been shown to be at least modestly effective in dealing with milder cases of depression, with a lower level of the negative side effects linked to prescription antidepressants. Other possible benefits include treating insomnia, binge eating, fibromyalgia and some chronic headaches.

On the Other: Use With Care

The Mayo Clinic found trace amounts of a contaminant called Peak X in several sources of 5-HTP. Peak X was blamed for liver and brain toxicity in a product taken off the market years ago. All 5-HTP available today is free of Peak X. Physician and natural health author Dr. Michael Murray estimates that it would take about 20 times the recommended dosage to feel any effect from Peak X even at the levels found by the clinic. Pregnant women and nursing mothers, children, and people with liver disease or those being treated with antidepressants should not take 5-HTP.

    Bottom Line

Nature's Way 5-HTP with vitamin B6, taken in the maximum recommended dosage of 200 mg daily, may provide at least short-term benefits for those suffering from depression and other conditions where an increase in seratonin levels is beneficial. Consult your physician before taking Nature's Way 5-HTP.
