The mass air sensor is a car component that is used to determine the amount of air that enters the car's engine. It is also known as the "mass air flow sensor" and "air flow meter sensor." The engine control module (ECM) uses the mass air sensor's measurement to calculate the proper amount of fuel to inject into the engine's cylinders. That results in optimum combustion and lower harmful emissions. The mass air sensor is usually installed between the air filter and engine, right inside the intake air duct. Some of the problems a faulty mass air sensor can cause include engine stalling, engine misfiring, and sluggish engine performance. The "Check Engine" light usually illuminates when there is a bad or contaminated mass air sensor. That is because the component is part of a car's emission control system.
