  • A kegerator is a simple construction that refrigerates a keg of beer while simultaneously allowing easy access to the keg through a dispenser nozzle. While all-in-one kegerator kits are widely available for purchase on the Internet, it is just as easy to build your own, provided you have access to a few tools and parts.

    Materials and Construction

A kegerator is easily constructed out of an old (but working) refrigerator, a spout, some plastic tubing and a CO2 tank. The size of the refrigerator depends on the size of the keg that you wish to refrigerate. Smaller kegs could make use of mini-fridges that are commonly used in dorm rooms, while full-size kegs will require a standard-size refrigerator. To make a place for a spout to fit onto the refrigerator, find a suitable location on the inside door, and mark a circle that is the correct width for the end of the spout to fit into. Drill out a hole in the refrigerator through the door, being careful to watch out for any metal or plastic shavings. After you insert the spout into the door, seal it tightly with glue and caulk. You'll want to form a seal that is both airtight and provides as much insulation as possible. When attaching the tubing and CO2 canister, be very careful to ensure that there is a tight seal. You might consider using plastic hose clamps for extra precaution, since one leak could mean disaster for your setup. You may wish to place the keg into a plastic pail in the refrigerator to protect against spills and leakage. Make sure to check the seals on the refrigerator before turning it on so that you don't waste electricity due to cold air leakage.

    Location Considerations

When you build your kegerator, keep in mind that the weight of the refrigerator may make it a challenge to move it around. The construction itself is not particularly messy, aside from drilling a hole in the refrigerator, so you may wish to construct it in the room that you plan to keep it in.

    Modifications

If you have access to a large enough refrigerator, consider making a kegerator that dispenses multiple types of beer. This can be accomplished by installing multiple spouts on the front of the refrigerator, and stacking the kegs next to each other in the refrigerator. If you don't have enough horizontal room for stacking, you can build a simple wooden frame that will allow you to stack the kegs on top of each other.
