<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Basic Walls
It is not absolutely necessary to prime a wall before painting. If the wall is reasonably clean and its current color is lighter than the paint you're applying, then the paint should cover the wall. Additionally, there are now paints available with built-in primers that eliminate the need for primer, although they do tend to be more expensive.
On the Other: Benefits of Priming
If you prime walls before painting, you have ensured that you have the best surface possible for painting. This means that your paint will cover better with fewer coats, will last longer and will dry closer to the color on the can than if applied directly to an unprepared wall.
Bottom Line
Although not absolutely necessary, priming walls before you paint can reduce your paint costs, make your paint job last longer, and the finished product will just look better.
