The Cadillac Escalade brought Cadillac sales out of the doldrums in the late 1990s to become one of the most popular luxury sport utility vehicles on the market. The Escalade has become so popular that the Escalade EXT pickup was added.
Origins
The Escalade was conceived for the 1999 model in a rush job just 10 months after Ford introduced the 1998 Lincoln Navigator.
Copycat
Cadillac wanted to get the Escalade on the market so quickly that it initially based the SUV on the luxury GMC Yukon Denali.
Skips Model Year
By 2000, Cadillac sought to bring the Escalade in line with its other Cadillacs by skipping the 2001 model year to provide time to develop a more thorough Cadillac design for 2002, according to Edmunds.com.
Types
Models after 2002 include the standard Escalade, the Escalade EXT pickup truck, the larger upscale Escalade ESV with the 130-inch wheelbase and the ESV Platinum.
Basic Specifications
The standard Escalade sits on a 116-inch wheelbase, measures 198.9 inches long and rates as one of the heaviest SUVs with a curb weight of 5,800 lbs.
Hybrid
Edmunds.com reports Cadillac debuted in 2008 its hybrid Escalade that features an electric motor working in tandem with the 6.2-liter V-8 to power the vehicle's accessories.
