Liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) contains between 10 and 16 percent chlorine. This chemical may be poured directly into the pool. Dry chlorine (calcium hypochlorite) comes in a tablet or granulated form. It contains 70 percent chlorine. Dry chlorine must be encased in a floating chlorine dispenser to ensure equal distribution.

Adding liquid chlorine to a pool requires knowing the amount of water your pool can hold. Once you know the pool capacity, adding the liquid chlorine in the amounts specified will ensure a safe, clean pool. Pool Capacity (gallons) followed by amount of liquid chlorine to add (ounces): 1,000 gallons, 1.5 ounces 2,500 gallons, 4 ounces 5,000 gallons, 8 ounces 7,500 gallons, 12 ounces 10,000 gallons,16 ounces 12,500 gallons, 20 ounces 15,000 gallons, 24 ounces
