Pontiac is an automobile that has been produced by General Motors since 1926. It's part of the GM family of cars that includes Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, Oldsmobile and GMC vehicles. GM schedules to phase out Pontiac at the end of the 2010 model year.
The Name
Pontiac was named after Indian Chief Pontiac who staged an uprising against the British following the French and Indian War.
Chevrolet Sibling
For most of its life, Pontiac was an upscale version of the entry-level Chevrolet featuring many high-end options and larger engines.
Distinction
Until 1956, the Pontiac was identified with its "silver streak" chrome stripe that extended from the lip of the front hood and continued to the bottom of the trunk lid.
Performance Car
During the 1960s Pontiac led the performance car field with the Pontiac GTO and Firebird, according to Edmunds.com.
Fiero
In 1984, Pontiac departed from its usual lineup with the two-seater mid-engine Fiero coupe to compete against the luxury German sports cars, according to welovepontiacs.com.
Demise
In an effort to secure U.S. government bailout funds, GM in 2009 trimmed production by phasing out the Pontiac line.
