Modern inkjet printers generally are designed to accommodate a variety of paper sizes and weights. A note labeled "A4 letter" by a printer indicates that paper cut to A4 letter size on the international standard should be used.
A4 Letter Size
A4 letter paper is designated by the ISO 216 guidelines as measuring 8.27 X 11.69 inches and is accepted as the standard size of most household printers.
A4 Legal
Beware of paper labeled A4 legal, as this is a slightly longer version of the A4 dimensions. It will be accepted into printers the same way but will leave extra white space if not used intentionally.
ISO Sizes
ISO 216 delineates the sizes of common printed materials; the International Organization for Standardization created the system to help standardize international operation of the printing industry.
ISO Standard - Design Concepts
ISO sizing is based around the ratio of 1:1.4142 (one to the square root of two). This sizing allows paper of the next smallest ISO paper size to be made by folding a given sheet in half.
A# Sizes
A0 is a largest size and is the size of a large poster. A4 is standard letter printing size. The smallest is A10, though practical limits generally restrict use to A6, which is postcard sized.
