  • There are several options when filing for bankruptcy depending on the ability of the debtor to pay back any portion of the debt. Filing fees differ for each option or "chapter" and do not include attorney fees.

    Chapter 7

The cost to file for chapter 7 is $299. Chapter 7 allows the courts to liquidate all the debtors non-exempt assets to pay the creditors. The debtor is then free of all unsecured debt.

    Chapter 11

The cost to file Chapter 11 is $1,039. The U.S. Courts says Chapter 11 is usually reserved for corporate reorganization and provides a plan to repay creditors without accruing additional interest.

    Chapter 12

The fee for filing Chapter 12 is $239. The U.S. Courts allow a chapter 12 bankruptcy for adjusting the debts of "family farmers" or "family fishermen."

    Chapter 13

The fee to file for chapter 13 is $274. Similar to Chapter 11, Chapter 13 allows private individuals to reorganize the repayment of debt over a period of time without additional interest charges or fees.

    Attorney Fees

Attorney fees are separate from filing fees and can range from $149 for minimal online support for filing personal bankruptcy to thousands of dollars for help filing a business bankruptcy.
