They never do. As long as it's not spayed, it can and will go into heat. That is one of the main reasons it's best to just spay early and avoid the headaches from the start

I had a wonderful cat who lived to be 22 years of age. When I first got her I couldn't afford to get her fixed. Later the vet said she was too old. This was long before I was as aware of animal welfare as I am now. She went into heat until her last year like clockwork. If you are considering not getting your cat fixed please be aware that a cat which is not spayed is vulnerable to many more serious conditions than one which has been spayed.
