  • Halloween, All Hallows Even, is the evening before All Hallows (or All Souls) Day, when the church traditionally remembered the departed. Across the whole of Catholic Europe, it was rather a scary night in which you were well advised to stay at home. On that night, if any, the ghosts would walk. This dates back probably to the 12th century or earlier. So in that sense, it precedes America, and may well have reached America via Ireland - though also via Italy, I would expect. But the pumpkins, dressing up, and trick-or-treat are all American inventions.
