  • Give it time - but as to women not having facial hair, it is simple breeding. Men probably sought out women with as little facial hair as possible (tens of thousands of years ago), and over hundreds of generations, those with more hair were less likely to mate and carry the gene. There are many extreme differences between men and women other than hair or sexual organs. We are much like two different species in a symbionic relationship.
  • In current human populations there is a great variation in phenotypes. In some "races" human males have very little if any faical hair. For instance, when was the last time you saw a native american indian with a full beard? Heavily bearded males occur more frequently in African and Eurasian races and less frequently in races of the far east and their descendants -- the native indians of the americas. Here is another answer to this question. The next time you look at your girlfriend's or wife's face, take REAL close look. You can clearly see very fine hairs in the beard and mustache. So realistically, women DO have facial hair. It is just very, very fine compared the male counterparts. Also, take a look at your aunt Bertha's upper lip and tell me that women have no facial hair. As women age their production of estrogen decreases and they get hairier. Mike de la Flor
  • A foetus is female at conception, they must develop male characteristics as they grow. Testosterone is the key male hormone that stimulates the development of the penis etc. During puberty a side affect of the high testosterone levels is extra hair. So a lack of facial hair in men would also mean a lack of functioning genitals! Which would be distasterous for a species! EDIT- Comment added to address 'conception' issue. I would now add (3 years later!) that when we evolved from other primates and lost the hair on our bodies it help significantly with keeping us cool. This is one of the things humans are exceptionally good at- keeping cool. Our bodies have developed many sweat glands, but the effect only works if the sweat can evaporate (nice use of thermodynamics!) which is better without hair in the way. Facial hair remains in males because this small area does not have a large impact on our ability to stay cool; but as I said previously, it is a side effect from the very, very important process of sexual development, so the selection pressure to cease growing facial hair was minimal.
  • because men were the hunters and they needed added hair to protect them from the elements. facial hair and body hair help to insulate
