No you don't, because Small Claims aren't criminal matters. Servers are supposed to hand you the notice in person but if they can't, some will just announce that you're being served and then drop it through your mail slot, etc. If you don't answer your door, I think a deputy will usually note a failure to serve and then notify the plaintiff of that, rather than bust down your door because e.g., your tree branch fell on a neighbor's car.
