Do you have to open the door to a deputy who is trying to serve you with papers for small claims court?

You don't have to, just pretend that your not home or sleeping..haha..or have some else open the door.

No but eventually they will issue an arrest warrant. May as well get it over with and just accept it.

No you don't, because Small Claims aren't criminal matters. Servers are supposed to hand you the notice in person but if they can't, some will just announce that you're being served and then drop it through your mail slot, etc. If you don't answer your door, I think a deputy will usually note a failure to serve and then notify the plaintiff of that, rather than bust down your door because e.g., your tree branch fell on a neighbor's car.
