Are great men almost always bad men?

No. The great men are the leaders, thinkers, and brave who have made our world a better place. The bad men might have harnessed greatness through power, but that greatness died along with them instead of living on to future generations.

Of course not, look at all the great people.....a lot were good.

Often eccentric but not bad men. They were really good men, thats what made them great. Their eccentricities often made people develop a mistaken notion about them.

guess it depends you what you mean by great and your perspective with regard to the person. if you mean the likes of: thomas aquinas, martin luther, martin luther king jr., & ghandi... then probably not on the other hand: darius, alexander, julius cæsar, stalin, mussolini, idi amin, saddam hussein, & castro were all loved greatly by their followers and could qualify as great. i would consider those guys bad, EASILY!

Why do you assume that great men are always known? That their accomplishments are always linked to their names? Why men?

I think its all in the eyes of the beholders.

I don't think that is true. However, some of the men in history that became rich by ill gotten means or taking advantage of workers have been some of the biggest philanthropists later in life. Perhaps guilt weighed on them as they aged.

definitely not. except you think Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, etc were bad.
