Why preface the question like that? All questions have a chance of being DR'd. Because you are talking about gays? Gay marriage should be legal but it takes the world a long time to catch on. It's way better now than 20 years ago.

State rights were given to balance the power of the whole. America is unique in that we are both a sum of the parts and one strong body altogether. The checks and balance maintain a level of democracy that keeps the nation both unified and independent simultaneously. Within the rights of American citizenship, you can choose the state that best appeals to you. I enjoy the freedom and the character/culture of each state. It's hard to bring gay marriage into the question, because naturally, I wish this was something that trickled down from the national government as legal and consistently accepted. I can only flip this to the positive and say, because of the power of the states, the rally toward increased freedom and rights continues to spread. Interesting question. Anyone who would downrate would be a real wanker!

I agree that all states should have the same rights but I also think that the punishments should be different.

because the US is fucked up and there system doesn't work.

we are both the sum of parts & parts of a sum. not all these parts are equal. it's part of the freedoms you have in america. you don't like what one state does? you don't have to leave the country, just move to another state. the reason things become federalized is because enough representatives from all states approve it. if not enough people approve, then i t won't become federal. it's just the way that democracy is run- by the people, for the people, of the people.

This is a very good question, so I can't imagine why you would be DR'd. States rights are important because it gives us the power of choice. If my state passes unreasonable taxes or becomes oppressive, I have at my disposal the ultimate form of protest... I can leave, but still remain in the United States and choose to live in the state that suits me the best. Unfortunately, this has become a lot less relevant since the federal government has chosen to usurp most power from the states. In fact, gay people can get married right now because of states' rights. Vermont has the right to legalize gay marriage, whether 2/3 of the other states agree with them or not. The union was a very ingenious system the way it was originally designed. Unfortunately, very little remains of the original design.
