Music albums
Cash
Vouchers of any sort (iTunes, high street shops, etc.)
Clothes (If you aren't sure what he likes, just look at what he's wearing and get something along those lines)
Also, I enjoy playing piano, so I normally ask for a couple of piano books at birthdays (Beatles, Coldplay, The Script, etc).

This is going to be subjective but considering I use to be a teenage boy once I'll give it a shot.
I loved playing sports when growing up so anything that was sports related to what I played:
(A) Sports Equipment - such as hokey stick, padding, gear, and etc.
I also loved playing video games so naturally:
(B) Console Games - refers to a game for a console aka "Xbox 360," 'PS3"
(B) Computer game
you can go to websites such as PCGAMER to check out good games.
(C) Music instrument
(D) Money (if you're low on the creative juice and want to make sure it's something he/she will like - who doesn't like money!)
