The IRS very much CAN do that. This whole scenario has been answered before at, among other places, http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091015112042AAnFf9y . They were supposed to contact you with a notice of intent to levy. For starts, call the IRS. If Obama gets his way with federalized health care, incidents such as this will get more frequent and much worse. What I do read in this is that you have a pay day, meaning a job I presume. That is good. I do not know when that payday is. With that $5 you can live on pilafs made from bulgur wheat and a $1.50 jar of beef bullion. If the next payday is not sufficient to cover the ensuing bills, such as the rent, I would recommend you speak to the landlord right away. Most people are a little more forgiving when the confiscator is the big-government IRS. Good luck.

If you have time, you could collect recyclables for cash to get you through to your next paycheck.

Hock something you can do without at your local pawn shop, then contact a tax lawyer.

From what I understand it is legal but they should have let you know so you would not be shocked when you checked your bank balance. Call the IRS and find out exactly what you owe and why. Most folks know if they owe money to the IRS. I'm wondering if the IRS made a mistake? I wish you the best and I hope you will get your money back if you do not owe the IRS.

It's happened to me too - it was brutal. One morning I have $2300 in the bank & that afternoon, I had $0. I had two days to get papers filled out so that they'd garnish $50 from hubbys paycheck twice a month until the rest was paid off, otherwise they would've kept taking it from the bank. Hang in there - it get's better & I promise that after it happens once, you'll be on top of it from now on.

I find it very hard to believe that you have not had past notifications from the IRS. The Internal Revenue Service gives the taxpayer every effort to right a wrong. You just ignored their letters.

Hope your checks aren't direct deposit and contact the IRS and see what you owe and if infact they have the right person.
