  • Only if you want someone to hire you. If you become an entepreneur, an inventor, an artist, a chef, or a number of other fields, it is potentially possible to get there on your own, but you will still need a very real education even if it's not through traditional schooling.
  • Absoloutly not.Thats just what weve been brainwashed into believing. There are many high achivers out there with no formal degree,s.Its not just about whats on paper. Its also about intelligence, natural talent, drive, ambition.A piece of paper only prooves you have completed a degree. It doesnt mean your talented at what your studying. Some people are born naturals at their trades and have never had formal training.Abraham Lincon became president of the U.S and was home schooled as was florence nightingale and many others.Dont let anyone tell you you cant do something without former qulifications, its nonsense.
  • not at all, my dad is a medical doctor, he hasnt practiced for 15 years and is now one of the biggest banana farmers in the southern hemesphere!
  • There's plenty of proof from successful people without degrees to show that it's not absolutely necessary, but a lot of employers do use the qualification as a baseline when considering candidates. It does depend very much on the type of career you choose though, as Kornflapper says, and there are many career types that favour on-the-job training instead of asking for qualifications. The down side of these kinds of jobs is that you have to start at the very bottom of the ladder and work your way up slowly, whereas with a degree you can often skip the first few steps and go in higher up. I think basically it depends what you want to do as a career. For some careers, no matter how many other good qualities you have, you might not even be considered without a degree, whereas with others it might be something which could help you but which isn't actually a requirement.
  • I do think that it's sad that having a degree is so "necessary" nowadays. As someone who took a different avenue after high school (I took a year off to "find myself" and then joined the Air Force), a lot of what I see coming out of high schools and a lot of people with degrees are people that may as well wipe their behinds with those certificates of completion. I can see having to have a specialized degree such as Accounting or the sciences. Just my opinion.
