    Great Answer

    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Capacitors are used to store electricity in the form of a static field. Extremely large capacitors can store enough electricity to take the place of batteries.

    The Farad

The "farad" is the unit of capacitance, or the amount of charge a capacitor can store. The unit is named after Michael Faraday, an English physicist.

    Considerations

Since the farad is a large unit, most capacitors are labeled with "microfarads" or "picofarads." A microfarad (uF) is one millionth of a farad; a picofarad (pF) is one trillionth of a farad.

    Size

Older one-farad capacitors used to be huge--at least the size of a coffee can. Modern production processes can shrink the size to less than a cubic inch.

    Fun Facts

There are 10-farad capacitors available. The price range as of October 2009 is from $115 to $250.

    Warning

Capacitors can store a lethal charge. Pay attention to the voltage rating and type of capacitor when replacing it.
