Hair loss, also known as alopecia, that occurs rapidly in women can be bothersome. Rapid female hair loss can cause psychological trauma and could be a sign of a serious underlying medical condition.
Types
There are three types of alopecia: alopecia areata which is the most common form and results in patchy hair loss on the scalp; alopecia areata totalis which is total hair loss of the scalp; and alopecia areata universalis, the rarest form, which defines total hair loss of the scalp and others areas of the body
Causes
Alopecia can be caused by autoimmune skin disease that use the body's white blood cells to halt hair growth. Chemotherapy kills rapidly multiplying cells in the body, including hair cells, which can sometimes result in hair loss.
Effects
The most common psychological side effects include feeling withdrawn, grief, anger, embarrassment and "guilt or self-blame that you somehow brought the disease on yourself," according to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.
Misconceptions
Hair loss can include eyelashes, eyebrows, and pubic hair, according to www.chemocare.com. but hair loss due to the three types of alopecia and chemotherapy are generally not permanent. Not all patients who undergo chemotherapy suffer from hair loss.
Treatment
Psychological effects can be treated by speaking with a mental health professional or locating a support group of people that understand what you are going through. A wig can be worn to cover up hair loss and medications such as cortisone pills and topical immunotherapy may be recommended.
