How do I look up names of businesses to see if one is available and not already being used?

    Go in your directory (yellow Pages) to the letter of what name you are considering and see if it's there. You won't really know until you file for your DBA papers if they are not listed. That happened to me when I opened my business, I was using a name until I filed for mine and I had to change it because someone else had that name already and they we not listed in the directory.
