Select one or a couple areas that are designated potty places in the back yard. When the dog is NOT watching, put its poo in the potty places. Then take the dog for a walk, in the back yard - leash and all if needed. S/he will smell their own poo and get the idea that that is where s/he should go. Continue to leave a bit of poo in the area. If the dog goes outside of the poo area tell the dog no. Wait until the dog is inside and pick up the poo and move to the potty area. Do not let the dog see you moving the poo. IF it sees you cleaning up after it in this manner it will assume that this is your job. Our dogs are trained to three poo spots, these are easy to tell they are poo spots since they are taller grasses (unkempt) and a few native flowering plants (weeds). Also dedicated another corner to digging. Dogs dig for a variety of reasons. One can train a dog to dig in one area and one area only (where they do not go potty) just by digging up the soil and removing the plant material. Let the dog watch you do that if you do not do much gardening. IF you do do a lot of gardening, then don't let the dog see you digging in their spot. Take the dog to the freshly dug area and move its paws through the soil. It will get the idea that that is its dig spot. Keep the dogs dig spot damp (fine mist sprayed water). Dogs usually dig to locate cooler (damper) soil to lay in to assist in cooling off.
